Cannabis – Opening a Retail Store

Right now, it is only legal to use cannabis if you have a medical prescription. Selling cannabis for non-medicinal purposes is still illegal.

The Federal government has passed Bill C-45 to legalize cannabis for sale and/or consumption for non-medicinal purposes. It will only be legal to sell or consume cannabis for non-medicinal purposes after Wednesday October 17, 2018.

Land Use Bylaw 

Amendments to Land Use Bylaw 2009-02 were passed by Town Council on August 7, 2018.  Please view revisions to the Land Use Bylaw as well as supplemental maps below:

Permit/license applications for Retail Cannabis Stores within the Town of Wainwright will be accepted on Wednesday, September 12th.  The Cannabis Store Application Procedure can be found below along with the required Development Permit Application form.  The permit fee is $50 (cheque or debit).

Business licenses for Cannabis Stores will not be issued until October 17, 2018.  Business License information and forms can be found here
