Cannabis – Opening a Retail Store

Right now, it is only legal to use cannabis if you have a medical prescription. Selling cannabis for non-medicinal purposes is still illegal.

The Federal government has passed Bill C-45 to legalize cannabis for sale and/or consumption for non-medicinal purposes. It will only be legal to sell or consume cannabis for non-medicinal purposes after Wednesday October 17, 2018.

A Public Hearing for PROPOSED amendments (Opening a Retail Cannabis Store) to Land Use Bylaw 2009-02 will be held in Town Council Chambers (1018 – 2 Ave) at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, August 7th, 2018 where persons claiming to be affected by these changes may voice their concerns. Concerns may also be expressed through written submissions mailed or delivered to the Town Office at 1018 – 2 Ave Wainwright AB T9W 1R1

First Reading of Draft changes to Land Use Bylaw 2009-02 was presented to Town Council on July 3, 2018.  Please view revisions to the Land Use Bylaw as well as supplemental maps below:

Permit/license applications for Retail Cannabis Stores within the Town of Wainwright will be accepted at a later date – TBA.
